JOHN H. TIER
DEAD AT PLAINFIELD
PLAINFIELD. April 19. John H. Tier. Plainfield's first iceman, twice member of the Common Council, and three times member of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, died at his home here yesterday. He was 67 years old. He leaves widow and two sons, John H, Tier, Jr., and William H. Tier, both of this city. Mr. Tier was born in New York. He came to Plainfield in 1855, opening the first regular meat market, supplanting the trade which had been done by peddling wagons. He acquired the pond which has since been known by his name, cut ice for his own use and started the ice business, in 1864, with one customer, whom he served with ice from the meat wagon on his rounds.

 | Tier, John J: 1850 Census There are three Tier (siblings?) living with George and Catherine (Tier) Cutter in Jersey City. The relationship between Catherine and the three is not yet clear; Catherine is 10 years older than Janes J Tier. Catherine is the daughter of Peter Tier - who is not thought to have John, Charles and Jane as decendents. They likey are Catherine's cousins - I would appreciate validation! |
 | Tier, John: 1850 Census John Tier (56) is shown living in West Milford, NJ with his wife Margaret (54) and children: William H (24), John J (22), Charles (20), Anne E (31), Joseph (15), Moses (14) and Margaret (10). John is a farmer while William and John J are blacksmiths, Charles is a carpenter and Joseph is a laborer. Given Ann's age and position in the family listing it is not clear what her relationship is to the rest. In fact, she may represent the head of a second family that would include Joseph, Moses and Margaret. Charlotte Cutter (5) is probably a niece; the daughter of George & Catherine Tier Cutter. |
 | Tier, John H: 1870 Census John (39) is shown living in Plainfield, NJ with his wife, Gertrude (32) and son John H (13) and William (7). John was employed as a butcher. |
 | Tier, John H: 1880 Census John H (50) was shown living in Plainfield, NJ with his wife, Gertrude (38) and two sons: John H (22) and William H (18). His sister-in-law, Josephine (Voorhees?, 35) and his mother-in-law, Theodora (NN) Vorhees (65) were also in the household. He and his son sold ice cream and ice. Johns middle name/initial must be validated. The family had a live-in servant, Lydia Dobbs (27). |
 | Tier, John H: 1907 Ice Harvest Gathered His Ice Crop.
Taking advantage of the latest cold snap to gather ice, John H. Tier, had a company of me at work on his pond Saturday and yesterday, harvesting a crop of eight inch ice, and completely filling his ice houses. The crop he has now is as good as any harvesting on the pond in some years. |
