IN LOVING MEMORY A service for burial of the dead for Dr. William Gwinn Payne and his beloved wife of 70 years, Adalynlee Valerie Payne will be celebrated at All Saint's Episcopal Church in Phoenix, AZ, 6300 North Central Avenue 85012, April 4, 2008, at 10:00 AM. They passed away within a month of one another this past summer: William died on May 30, 2007 with Adalynlee holding his hand; and Adalynlee died in her sleep, content and without pain or ambivalence on July 1, 2007. Memorial services were held in Billings, Montana last summer. Dr. William Gwinn Payne was born on the campus of Arizona Teacher's College on January 2, 1915. He was the third child of Frances and Ira Dawson Payne, the educator for whom a building in the College of Education at Arizona State University is named. The third of four children, William always worked hard. He loved science, history, music, and time outside exploring the natural wonders of the Arizona desert. He graduated from Tempe High School, and attended Arizona State Teacher's College, where he studied education, music, and science. He met Adalynlee in the orchestra at college. On June 7, 1937 they married in a double wedding ceremony with Adalynlee's younger sister, Annette, and Lynn Fitzgerald. William taught at Phoenix Union High School before leaving with Adalynlee to study medicine at Baylor Medical School. Medical school was a different experience in those days. As a junior, he had to deliver 50 babies in a home setting in order to move on to his senior year. He served as a Navy doctor in World War II, and returned to Tempe to take up a practice in general medicine. Dr. Payne cherished the belief that medicine was a "priesthood," and was available to his patients in a way few doctors today can imagine. In addition to his practice, he was a marvelous civil servant, participating in local and national school boards. Dr. Payne was on the Board of Regents for the State of Arizona. He was an active Rotarian, a Mason, and was involved in the growing work of medical care delivery in the Valley. But his first commitment was to his practice-the people who had become his community and friends. Dr. Payne retired after 47 years of service to the community and those he loved. Five years before he passed from this life, he moved with Adalynlee to Billings, Montana, leaving children and grandchildren in the Valley to receive the same quality medical care that he had delivered. Dr. Payne was gracious to the end. Sharing his knowledge through service to people he loved and respected was the essence of this shy, heroic man. Adalynlee Valerie Hibben, was born in Needles, California on February 21, 1915. She and her sister Annette grew up dancing and singing from the time they could walk. Their mother, Maude Harrell Hibben provided piano music for the Lion's Club, the Masons, the Harvey House for the railroad, even for the silent movies. Adalynlee was an exceptional student, and graduated as valedictorian of her high school. She and Annette spent several semesters together at Arizona Teacher's College in Tempe. She received a degree in education, and taught in Coolidge, Arizona before marrying William. She committed herself to providing her husband with sanctuary, and took care of all the substance of life that allows a man to sustain such a busy life. Adalynlee raised five children, and actively participated in all of their lives. She was a fixture of the PTA at Payne Training School, and was involved in their high school activities, as well. She fostered the love of music in all her children, and infused her family with a sense of humor and quiet dignity. Adalynlee's life-time romance and commitment to William came to an end at the moment her love died. Within a week of William's passing, she had a heart attack, and as quickly as respectably possible, joined him. William and Adalynlee are survived by Annette Fitzgerald, Adalynlee's sister; their children: William, Jr., his wife Nancy, and their children William III, Katie, and Shelley; Anne Goldstein and her children Sean, Julie Holley, and Patrick; Susan and her husband Gerry Lidstrom; Melinda and her husband Jeff Sanders, and their daughter Sarah; and Daniel, his wife Peggy, and their children David and Kelly; and great-grandchildren Garrett Payne, Michael Holley, and Michael Goldstein. It is the family's hope that all who would like to remember Dr. and Mrs. Payne will be able to join them on April 4th.
