Obituary |
20 NOV 1934 |
Former Wayne county Commissioner dead, 90 - James K. Hornbeck, 90 a former commissioner of Wayne county, having served on the board with the late Thomas C. Madden and John Mandeville, died at his home at Equinunk, PA Friday evening, Nov. 16,1934. at 7:30 o'clock. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at his late home, Rev. Philllip Solbjor of the Methodist Church, officiating and Masonic services at the cemetery in charge of Callicoon Lodge, F. & A. M.
Mr. Hornbeck was well and favorably known in Wayne and Pike counties, where he conducted business. He had gained recognition and prestige as one of the influential and representative business men of Equinunk, PA, where he was in the lumber and coal business for a number of years. He was born at Lackawaxen, Pike county, Oct. 16, 1844 and was, therefore, in his ninety-first year. He was a son of Jason and Rebecca (Cole) Hornbeck. At the age of fourteen years he commenced his business career as a lumberman in the employ of William Holbert, a brother-in-law, with whom he remained for a number of years, rafting lumber down the Delaware and working in the saw mills at Equinunk. In 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah J. Branning of Wayne county, a native of New York state and a daughter of Moses D. and Ellen Branning. Five children were born to them all of whom are deceased, except Gertrude S. wife of Isaac B. Sandercock, Equinunk, PA. Five grandchildren also survive. About eight years ago James K. Hornbeck was united in marriage to Mrs. Julia Mills, late of Creamton. She died Nov. 19, 1933.
From 1866 to 1869 Mr. Hornbeck lived at Beachlake. He then moved to his native county, where he erected a saw mill and engaged in the manufacture of lumber for three years, Returning to Wayne county he lived on Mr. Holbert's farm and in 1876 went to Equinunk, remaining only a short time. He then went to Camden, NJ, where he was placed in charge of Mr. Holbert's saw mills. Two and a half years later he returned to Equinunk and purchased a tract of land and a mill of his brother-in-law, operating the same several years. In 1883 he accepted the position of foreman for Mr. Holbert at Westcolang Park where he built a large saw and planing mill. He next purchased the Stanton mills at Camden, NJ, where he engaged, in partnership with J.G. and William Holbert, in the manufacture of lumber until 1890. The year previous he had moved his family back to Equinunk, where he bought the mills and real estate of J.G. Holbert, his nephew, who had erected a saw and planing mill and also an excelsior factory. The output of this factory was from four to five tons a day, which was shipped to New York City. In 1894 this property was destroyed by fire. Few men in Pennsylvania were more familiar with every department of lumber business than was Mr. Hornbeck, who in early life rafted both square timber and logs down the Delaware River to market and had since engaged in the manufacture of lumber.
James K. Hornbeck was a Republican in politics, was affiliated with Callicoon Lodge, F.&A.M., Callicoon NY; Commandery of Birmingham, NY, and served as a soldier in the Civil War. He had a career which illustrated most forcibly the possibilities open to a young man who possessed sterling business qualifications. He was awarded success, which followed individual effort only.
