Notes |
- Note #1:
[Tier - Valentine v20t2356.FTW]
In a note to Lewis Tier date 9/14/1926 someone writes him to ask if he knows if Valentine Tier fought in the Revolutionary War.
- Note #2
[V20T23~1.FTW]
A letter written by Reverend Grant Von Blarcom (descendant of valentine) to Lewis Tier in October 1926 (copied by Carl J. Glaser) explains the following. Now as to Valentine Tier (Our Grant Grandfather) He was born in 1743 and died in 1825, the same year my father (George Hopper Tier) was born. Valentine came to America in 1755, being 12 years old. He came with a brother and a cousin. One of these evidently named Jacob as i have a transcript of a deed whereby Valentine transferred, to Jacob, two lots in New York City located at what is now Grand and Motts Streets. I was born on Grand Street. The two lots mentioned were deeded to Valentine by the Attorney General of New York State (Josiah Ogden Hoffman), they having been part of the Bayard Estate. Bayard was a Tory and his land had been confiscated by the State of New York. I also have a transcript of title, passed by the Attorney General, dated October 1, 1800.
Valentine Tier married Elizabeth Hopper. How long he remained in New York, I cannot say but he eventually found his way into New Jersey and settled somewhere near Macopin, which is in Passaic County, near greenwood Lake. He also owned land on which the city of Utica is built. What disposition was made of this land I do not know.
Valentine was a Alsatian and was French. Some members of the family spelled the name Tier with a final "s" and some do at the present time so the lady from Strasburg, that you mentioned, is corroborated.
Note by Carl J. Glaser: Note--In an old book in my possession the name appears in several places as Thiers as well as Tiers and Tier.--C.J.G.)"

 | Tier, Valentine: 1807 Land Indenture P3 This page of the indenture does not mention Valentine, but is otherwise related. |
 | Tier: Charlotte-Smith-2000 This is part of an exchange with Charlotte Smith on Ancestry.com about Valentine Tier. Fundamentally, we disagreed about Valentine's age - and hence any family relationship he had with Daniel Tier/Tien listed on the manifest for the ship Patience.
Further, her paper indicates that Daniel & Marie (Conte) Tier had 6 children: Matthew (1742-1742, Germany), Valentine (1743), Matthew (1744, Kleinvillers), Marie Magdalene (1747, Kleinvillers) Jean (John) (1749, Kleinvillers) and Jacob (1751, Philadelphia). On Valentine Tier's page in this tree, Carl J. Glaser is quoted "A letter written by Reverend Grant Von Blarcom indicates Valentine came to America in 1755, being 12 years old. He came with a brother and a cousin." The brother and cousin were not articulated. |
 | Tier: Charlotte Smith - Hugenot A note for Valentine Tiers on page 8 of this document lends credence to my belief that Valentine's relationship to the Tier family in the document is tenuous at best (notwithstanding my wish that the linkage is accurate):
"Notes for VALENTINE TIERS:Valentine in 1790 directory of NY City. Moved after 1807. Not on 1790 census. Not sure he belongs in the family of Mathew . I followed him in New York City and he is living near all these people. This marriage to Ann might be a second marriage as he is about 40..not sure on him"
