- The birth year on Alice (Kelly) Martin's death certificate would seem to be a rough approximation. She appeared on six census records and with each succeeding census she lost between one year and 4 years of age - eventually losing a total of 11 years until the day she died. On that day there was a reversal - she became 5 years older than the previous estimate.
The census years below reflect her varying estimated birth years:
1880 - born 1872, age 8 - very likely the only time her age was correct
1890 - census records were destroyed in a fire
1900 - born 1873, age 27 (1 net year younger)
1910 - born 1877, age 33 (5 net years younger)
1920 - born 1878, age 42 (6 net years younger)
1930 - born 1880, age 50 (8 net years younger)
1940 - born 1881, age 59 (11 net years younger)
1950 - born 1877, age 72 (6 net years younger) on death certificate)
The calculation of age during the census enumerations has varied by census. Until 1850, ages were group into sets as explained below.
1830 instructions:
The enumeration consisted of inquiries dividing the free White population of each sex according to the number under 5 years of age, 5 to 10, 10 to 15, 15 to 20, 20 to 30, 30 to 40, 40 to 50, 50 to 60, 60 to 70, 70 to 80, 80 to 90, 90 to 100, and 100 years and upward; a classifiÂcation of slaves and free colored persons, respectively, according to the number of each sex under 10 years of age, 10 to 24, 24 to 36, 36 to 55, 55 to 100, and 100 years and upward; the number of White persons and of ‘‘slaves and colored persons,’’ aged under 14 years, 14 and under 25, and 25 years and upward, who were deaf and dumb, but without distinction of sex in either case, and also the number of each of these two classes named who were blind, but without distinction of sex or age; and a statement, of White persons only, who were aliens, i.e., foreigners not naturalized.
1840 instructions were ostensibly the same as in 1830:
1850 Census
Subsequent to the 1840 census, the "age at last birthday" was the general instruction - regardless of the date when the enumeration occurred. That led to a potential difference in the age of between 9 and 11 years from the census and the number of citizens effected would be dependent upon the date of the enumeration. If the date slipped by a month, then 1/12 of the populations might see their age vary by a year. However the instructions in 1910 and 1920 were substantially different. In 1910 the ages were calculated from the base date of 01 April, 1910. That date coincided with the start of the census. In 1920 the instructions were identical - except the base date was 01 January, 1920. Statistically that meant roughly 25% of the citizens over ten years of age would only be 9-years older than the last enumeration. Anyone born between 01 January 1910 and 01 April 1910 would be considered 9-years old - an oddity given that a child entered on the 1910 census would logically have lived the decade between constitutionally mandated enumerations.
1850 instructions:
Under heading 4, entitled "Age," insert in figures what was the specific age of each person at his or her last birthday previous to the 1st of June, opposite the name of such person. If the exact age in years can not be ascertained, insert a number which shall be the nearest approximation to it. The age, either exact or estimated, of everyone, is to be inserted.
1880 instructions:
Ages.—The exact age in figures will be inserted in column 6 whenever the same can be obtained; otherwise, the nearest approximation thereto.
1900 instructions:
Date of birth. The object of this question is to help in getting the exact age in years of each person enumerated. Many a person who can tell the month and year of his birth will be careless or forgetful in stating the years of his age, and so an error will creep into the census. This danger can not be entirely avoided, but asking the question in two forms will prevent it in many cases. Enter in the first division of column 7 the name or abbreviation of the month in which the person was born, thus: Jan., Feb., Mar., Apr., May, June, July, Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., or Dec. Enter in the second division the year in which the person was born, thus: 1841, 1897, etc. Column 8. Age at last birthday. The object of this question is to get the age of each person in completed years, or in the case of a child under one year of age in completed months. For each person of one year of age or over, enter the age at last birthday in whole years, omitting months and days. For children who, on the first day of June, 1900, were less than one year of age, enter the age in months, or twelfths of a year, thus 3/12, 7/12, 8/12. For a child less than one month old, enter the age as follows: 0/12. Endeavor to ascertain in each case the month and year of birth called for in column 7, but where this is impossible get as nearly as possible the exact years of age. An answer given in round numbers, such as "about 30," "about 45," is likely to be wrong. In such cases endeavor to get the exact age.
1910 instructions:
Column 7. Age at last birthday.—This question calls for the age in completed years at last birthday. Remember, however, that the age question, like all other questions on the schedule, relates to April 15, 1910. Thus a person whose exact age on April 15, the census day, is 17 years, 11 months, and 25 days should be returned simply as 17, because that is his age at last birthday prior to April 15, although at the time of your visit he may have completed 18 years. Age in round numbers.—In many cases persons will report the age in round numbers, like 30 or 45, or "about 30" or "about 45," when that is not the exact age. Although the census indicates Alice was widowed, it was believed that she had long been separated (circa 1899) from her husband James Martin. She was thought to have begun living with Peter shortly after her younger sister, Catherine, died.
Alice's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Martin, would have been 23 during the census enumeration and might have been employed as a school teacher and no longer living at home. She has not been found on a 1920 census. |

- Alice was separated from her husband James Martin for undocumented reasons and their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Martin, never would/could clarify the marital dissolution. The wedding band that Alice wore is in the possession of Mary Elizabeth (Martin) Carr's granddaughter, Jacqueline Stockdale. The initials of James and Alice are inscribed on the inside. Following their separation, Alice went to live with her sister Catherine (Katie) and brother-in-law Peter Walsh. When Katie died in childbirth in 1913, Alice (Aunt Al to all the children) continued to live with Peter.
