(Richard) Warren has a long history bottling in Paterson dating back to 1879 starting with the William S. Kinch Company, then in 1882 he went into business under his name with Kinch and Arthur Donnely as "Richard Warren & Co." until 1889, at which time the name changed to "Richard Warren Co." and Arthur Donnely is no longer part of the company. They remained in business as such until at least 1899, the business was at 89-91-93 Prospect St. in the city. In 1899 William S. Carr is listed as President of the company and Richard Warren as treasurer, his son is listed as Secretary.
Richard Warren and William Carr lived around the corner from each other; one at 615 East 18th Street and the other at 423 Broadway. |

William's family increased by one since the 1900 Census with Henry Parke born in August 1900. Henry's middle name was without the "e" in later documents. Four children are employed outside the house: Arthur is an engineer, Florence is a teacher, William in the same illegible profession (freemason?) as his father, and Elizabeth is a nurse in a hospital.
William continued to work as a foreman at a locomotive works. As noted on the 1900 Census, the works was probably in the area of Spruce & Market streets. Grant works was no longer in business. |

 | Carr, William Seward: 1880 marriage to Elizabeth E Donnelly
William Seward Carr and Miss Elizabeth E. Donnelly, both 25 years of age, were married on 20 October, 1880 at 4 P.M. in what appears to read the Donnelly residence in Paterson (Broadway), NJ. Although, family records reflect the location as 431 Broadway which maps to the modern location of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. William was employed as a mechanic when they were married. The parents were listed as Adam Carr & Sarah E Tier and Arthur M. Donnelly & Amelia M. Drury. Of the four parents, only Sarah was born in the US. The others were born in Scotland, Ireland or England. The witnesses appear to read S.F. Watson and Amelia Donnelly. The name of the minister is not entirely legible but it appears he was from Paterson, NJ. Elizabeth's middle initial may have been in error - her middle name was Amanda. |

 | Cemetery: Cedar Lawn, Carr family plots This diagram was provided by the cemetery staff to assist visitors in locating grave sites. Since the diagram is not wholly legible, visitors must first locate the grave site numbers on a larger diagram in the office - which itself requires the use of a magnifying glass. The star on the lower portion is the site of the office, while the two red dots on the right-hand portion indicate the general location of two Carr family plots:
1) the left-hand site is a without a monument, although there are two headstones; one for William A Carr and one for Elizabeth Chapman Carney (plot 164);
2) the right-hand site adjacent to Union Avenue has a single monument engraved with four names across the base: Ella, Ada, Adam and Sarah.
The main entrance to the cemetery is from McLean Blvd (Route 20) which runs between the cemetery and the Passaic River. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1870 Census The census showed Adam (38), a plumber from Scotland living in the 4th Ward of Paterson, NJ along with his wife Sarah (38), Ada (18), William (15), Ella (7), and Henry L (5). Ada and Ella would never marry. Three children died in 1864: Catherine at age 7, Horace Greeley at age 6 and Frances at age 5. Other documents show that his profession is understated. His company, Adam Carr & Co., manufactured brass cocks and iron & galvanized pipes. Eric and Barbara (nee Stockdale) Mann located four US Patents awarded or assigned to Adam Carr in the late 1800's. They are available elsewhere on this website. The patents are associated with steam propulsion and relate directly to his indicated occupation: plumber. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1882 Patent #257,634 Straightway Valve Carr, William Seward: 1882 Patent 257,634 Straightway Value
James Arthur of Jersey City was assignor of one-half of the patent No 257,634 to William S. Carr of Paterson, NJ. The patent was an improvement in straight-way valves that would be less susceptible to the collection of sediment and less susceptible to friction when two internal disks are drawn back. |

 | Kinch Bottling Company 1887 Richard Warren was an employee of the Kinch Bottling Company. Richard eventually owned the company and it became known as Richard Warren & Co. and later The Richard Warren Co. operating out of a complex at 84, 91 & 93 Prospect St., Paterson, NJ. Arthur Donnelly and William S. Carr were participants in the company at various times.

 | The Rogers Locomotive Works Paterson, New Jersey was the home of five steam locomotive manufacturers. The largest of these was the Rogers Locomotive Works. It is likely that William Seward Carr worked at this facility - it was but 1.4-miles from his home at 423 Broadway. |
 | Paterson Locomotive Works - 1887 This map reflects the presence in Paterson of three locomotive companies: Rogers works, Grant works, and the Danforth and Cook works. The Sanborn company produced fire insurance maps that convey various aspects of fire coding: number of floors, heights, construction materials, roof materials, street numbers, etc.

Headstones |
 | Carr: William Seward family plot The Carr family plot contains two headstones, despite there being 11 bodies buried there. William Seward Carr does not have a headstone. The stone for his son, William Adam, is in the foreground and Elizabeth Chapman Carney's (wife of James Carney) is in the near background. William Adam Carr's grandfather, Adam Carr, is buried in another family plot roughly 40 yards to the right (in this view) and across Union Avenue. (See cemetery diagram on this web site.) Plot: Section 5 Lot 164 |
