 | S.S. Munargo 1921 Photographed while on commercial service for the Munson Line between New York and Havana during the 1920s or early 1930s. (www.Shipscribe.com) It was a commercial cargo and passenger ship built for the Munson Steamship Lines by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, New Jersey launched 17 September 1921. Munargo operated for the line in the New York-Bahamas-Cuba-Miami service passenger cargo trade. The ship was acquired by the War Shipping Administration and immediately purchased by the War Department for service as a troop carrier during World War II. Shortly after acquisition the War Department transferred the ship to the U.S. Navy which commissioned the ship USS Munargo (AP-20). She operated in the Atlantic Ocean for the Navy until returned to the War Department in 1943 for conversion into the Hospital ship USAHS Thistle.(WIKI)
Ella G. Carr sailed on this ship in October 1931. |

5 Documents |
 | Carr, Adam: 1870 Census The census showed Adam (38), a plumber from Scotland living in the 4th Ward of Paterson, NJ along with his wife Sarah (38), Ada (18), William (15), Ella (7), and Henry L (5). Ada and Ella would never marry. Three children died in 1864: Catherine at age 7, Horace Greeley at age 6 and Frances at age 5. Other documents show that his profession is understated. His company, Adam Carr & Co., manufactured brass cocks and iron & galvanized pipes. Eric and Barbara (nee Stockdale) Mann located four US Patents awarded or assigned to Adam Carr in the late 1800's. They are available elsewhere on this website. The patents are associated with steam propulsion and relate directly to his indicated occupation: plumber. |
 | Carr, Ella G: 1931 Manifest from NYC Ella was aboard the SS Munargo sailing from New York on Oct 10, 1931 en route to Nassau, Bahamas and arriving back at the New York on Oct 23 1931. By all appearances she was traveling alone with a home residence in Oyster Bay, NY. Her birth was listed as May 15, 1901 in Brooklyn, NY.
The ship was Built by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, New Jersey in 1921. Tonnage: 6,336. Dimensions: 413' x 57'. Single-screw, 17 knots. Steam turbines. Two masts and one funnel. It was purchased by United Fruit Company in 1938, and placed in their New York-Miami-Nassau-Havana service. Renamed: Thistle (U. S. hospital ship). Scrapped in United States, 1957. |
