STEAMSHIP KANSAN SUNK WITH CARGO
Flour and Steel Worth Millions Lost With Big American Boat.
NEW YORK. July 11 -- The American steamship Kansan, carrying a crew of 50 men, has been sunk, presumably off the French coast, according to a cablegram received today by the France and Canadian Steamship company, which charted the vessel. The fate of those on board in not known. The vessel was valued at $3,000,000. She was carried a cargo of flour and other foodstuffs, together with 4,000 tons od steel, which valued at $2,000,00 was consigned to the French government. A majority of her crew were Americans. The cablegram did not say whether the streamer was torpedoed or where the sinking took place. The vessel left New York in June 28, commanded by Capt. E.A. Forsythe. The Kansan, owned by (the American-Hawaiian Steamship company, struck a mine off the French coast last December. She was then reported as sunk but was salvaged and returned to New York. In October 1916, the Kansan was held up by German submarine U-53 off Nantucket, but was allowed to proceed after the captain learned his identity. She was of 7,913 tons gross.
The Des Moines Register, 12 July 1917
RJCarr, 24 June 2019: According to his obituary, William A. Carr was the last crewman to escape the sinking vessel. Four crewman were eventually reported lost. |

- RJCarr (09 Sep 2019): Ancestry.com reports the ship's arrival was in Boston, however the document is clear in indicating that the arrival was in NYC.
The manifest of SS Rotterdam reflects William held a citizen's ID #934 issued in Norfolk (presumably VA). This may have been a ship returning US servicemen from wartime service in Europe since all passengers were males between 18 and 39 years of age. William was 31 and single with a listed residence of 370 van Houten Street, Patterson, NJ. William married Frances R. Barry on 05 July 1919 - weeks after he landed back in the US.

 | Cemetery: Cedar Lawn, Carr family plots This diagram was provided by the cemetery staff to assist visitors in locating grave sites. Since the diagram is not wholly legible, visitors must first locate the grave site numbers on a larger diagram in the office - which itself requires the use of a magnifying glass. The star on the lower portion is the site of the office, while the two red dots on the right-hand portion indicate the general location of two Carr family plots:
1) the left-hand site is a without a monument, although there are two headstones; one for William A Carr and one for Elizabeth Chapman Carney (plot 164);
2) the right-hand site adjacent to Union Avenue has a single monument engraved with four names across the base: Ella, Ada, Adam and Sarah.
The main entrance to the cemetery is from McLean Blvd (Route 20) which runs between the cemetery and the Passaic River. |

 | Carr, William A: 1917 Patersonian Ship Attacked by Submarine This is a transcription of the news story published after William A. Carr arrived home in Paterson, NJ from his wartime adventures on a steamship. A copy of the news story is linked to William's page.
(The book, "Navy Ordnance Activities -- World War 1917-1918" published in 1920 does not validate the actual sinking - although the engagement is corroborated. It records on page 185 that "(t)here were many instances in which prompt and effective gunfire repulsed submarines, and in most cases where the U-boat's guns were not of superior range, the ship escaped. Thus on July 10, 1917,the Gold Shell drove off a "sub," as did the Dakotan on Sept. 6, 1917." That description is simialr to one found on pages 51-52 of the book, "Our Navy at War," by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels in 1922. "Many instances are recorded where prompt and effective gunfire from armed merchantmen had succeeded in effectively stopping a submarine attack and saving the ship. Indeed, when the periscope of a submarine was sighted before the submarine had a chance to launch a destructive torpedo or where the guns of the submarine did not vastly outrange the guns of the merchant vessel the ship in almost all cases escaped. Thus the Dakotan. on September 6, 1917,drove off a submarine, as did the steamship Gold Shell, on July 10, 1917." |
