The construction project employed about 25,000 people.[2] Military and civilian airlifts, huge sealifts during the short summers, snowcat trains and barges distributed vast cargoes along the length of the Line to build the permanent settlements needed at each site. It was to military and naval units that fell much of the job of carrying mountains of supplies to the northern sites. More than 3,000 U.S. Army Transportation Corps soldiers were given special training to prepare them for the job of unloading ships in the Arctic. They went with the convoys of U.S. Navy ships and they raced time during the few weeks the ice was open to land supplies at dozens of spots on the Arctic Ocean shore during the summers of 1955, 56, and 57.[4]"

 | Carr, John L: 1959 Seoul Korea It was with some delight, no doubt, that the 8th Army transportation battalion commander assigned Captain Carr to command its car company. Judging from the flip calendar on the desk, the picture was taken just before Christmas, 1959; perhaps 17 December. The general timeframe is corroborated by the woolen, winter uniform. The picture shows him busy at work; that may be an English-Korea dictionary in the background. Although not validated, it appears that the tray on the desk holds cigarettes, a lighter and an ash tray. The captain relinquished that habit in about 1963 when he was a major in Mannheim, Germany. |
 | Carr, John L: 1969 Saigon The place has since been renamed: Ho Chi Minh City.
John commanded the Army's 71ST Transportation Terminal Service Battalion at a facility named Newport.
http://www.allanfurtado.com/newportterminal.html
"Newport is located on the Saigon River three or four miles north of the Saigon port and just south of the main bridge for highway 1A which had direct route to Bien Hoa air base and Long Binh field depot and the main ammunition depot. The primary purpose of Newport was to take over the handling of all U.S. military cargo that was presently being handled at the Saigon port. Newport would become part of the Saigon area port complex. The components of this complex included Saigon port, Vung Tau where ships lined up and waited for pilots to take them up the river to Newport, Camp Davis which was up river for military housing and the Cat Lai complex located seven miles south east of Saigon. The complex handled over sixty percent of ammunition entering Vietnam (Biggs, King, Criner, 1994). That included several different barge locations for the loading and unloading of ammunition from ships in stream, but of these several barge locations, only two were used exclusively for ammunition and they were located at Buu Long and Cogido. Therefore, the above mentioned would all be handled and operated as a single command. |
