This enumeration probably erred in listing one son and two daughters - none with given names. In light of the ages shown, the logical enumeration would have been one daughter (Ada, b. 1852) and two sons (William & Horace born in 1855 and 1858). Another daughter (Catherine Frances born in December, 1859) was not listed at all. All four children were living on the date of the enumeration - June 1860. |

 | Carr, James: 1842 Jul 16, Immigration pg2 James Carr (38) and his wife Agnes (49) are shown arriving from Scotland with two sons: Adam (11) and William (5). James's occupation was listed as barber. James would variously spell his name as Kerr and Carr. (See midway down the passenger list. Note the unrelated child "born on the passage" on the last line. It appears that the child was named for the ship on which they were sailing: Medora Cassilly. The parents were near the top of the same page. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1852 Marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Tier The ledger lists the date of marriage as 9 June, 1852, vice 3 July, 1851 that is carried by family records. It is not clear why there is a discrepancy unless this document is record of marriage applications and not a marriage record as purported. The column headers are not entirely legible: perhaps they are: status, Name of Deacon (?), residence, Offical title, Where Ceremony, Names of parties (?), Residence, Names of Parents (?), Occupation, and Time of ?. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1860 Census This census matches with Adam and his wife, Sarah Eleizabeth Tier, but the sexes of the three children are at odds with the known children. The census indicates M-9-years, F-6-years, and F-2-years. The family records show the sexes were F, M, F - Ada (9), William S (6), and Cathrine (2). |
 | Carr, Adam: 1860 US Naturalization This document is signed by both Adam Carr and his father, James Kerr. The fascinating aspects of the signatures are twofold: James signs with an X and spelling of his name as "Kerr" contrasts with Adam's which is "Carr". It tends to put to rest the story that James changed his name to Carr upon arrival in the USA. If he did, it took 18 years to make the decision and it was made after Adam reached his own decision. |

 | Carr, Adam: 1861 US Patent No 32,045 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
ADAM CARR, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED LOW-WATER ALARM FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. dated April 16, 1861.
To all whom1 it may concern;
Be it known that I, ADAM CARR, of Paterson, Passaic county, and State of New Jersey, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements iii the Construction and Operation of Water-Alarms or Low-Water Detectors for Steam-Boilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which — (more)
{The invention is intended to indicate, by a steam operated whistle, when water in a steam boiler falls below an established line.} |
 | Carr, Adam: 1866 Fire Fire on Cortlandt Street. - Shortly before six o'clock this morning a fire was discovered on the fourth floor of premises No. 45 Cortlandt street, occupied by Adam Carr, brass cock manufacturer and dealer in wrought iron and galvanized iron pipe. The flames extended to the third floor, also occupied by Mr. Carr, and damage to the extent of $1,500 was sustained. Supposed to be covered by insurance. The first and second floors were considerably damaged by water. Mr. Bailey, manufacturer of washing and wringing machines, occupies the second floor, and the first floor is occupied by Mr. Carr. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1867 Legislative Gossip "...The bill to incorporate teh Passaic Land Improvement adn Buildig Company, introduced by Mr. Buckley, names as corporators....Adam Carr...and others, who are authorized to purchse, use, hold and dispose of such real and personal estate in Passaic county as may be necessary or expedient to their objects. The capital is fixed at $250,000 with liberty to double the same." |
 | Carr, Adam: 1867 Election Results Challenged An extract from the Journal of the Senate of the State of New Jersey: "From the examination of the papers in connection with the case, together with the voluminous evidence (contained in five hundred and fifty pages), taken before a Master in Chancery, it appears that at the general election held in the County of Passaic, on the fourth day of November, 1873, Adam Carr, the contestant, and John Hopper, incumbent, were candidates for State Senator for said county. The official statement of the county board of canvassers show that Adam Carr received three thousand seven hundred and fiftyone votes, that John Hopper received three thousand seven hundred and seventy-eight votes, that Andrew Derrom received ninety votes, and three scattering. It appearing to the county board of canvassers that John Hopper had received a plurality of twenty seven of the whole number of votes cast in said county of Passaic, they thereby declared and officially certified that John Hopper was duly elected Senator for three years." Adam alleged: "FIRST. That the ballot box used in the Seventh "Ward of the city of Paterson, was taken from the polling place, out of the custody of the proper officers, to the Passaic Hotel, in a neighboring ward, during the time of dinner, between the hours of twelve noon and two o'clock P. M., and also, that the same ballot box was removed from the polling place, out of the custody of the proper officers, to the Hamilton House during the time of supper, between the hours of seven and nine o'clock in the evening, and before the ballots had been all counted.
SECOND. That ballots containing the name of Adam Carr were abstracted from the ballot box of the Seventh Ward, and ballots containing the name of John Hopper were substituted in place thereof; as also, that ballots upon which the name of Adam Carr was written or printed, were abstracted from the ballot box, and his name erased and then returned to the ballot box." Adam was unsuccessful in his charge of fraudulent voting. |

 | Carr, Adam: 1869 Real Estate Meeting The NY Herald Tribune ran a story about a meeting of prominent real estate owners and agents held at Derrom's Hall, Paterson to decide what means to take to bring property in and about Paterson to the notice of the New York public.
The hall mave have been named after Colonel Andrew Derrom, - (1817 - 1892), of the 25th NJ Infantry during the American Civil War, and an Engineer, Businessman, and Public Servant. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1870 State Politics At the bottom of The Evening Journal story about state politics is notice that - "Mr. Adam Carr is names in connection with the Republican nomination for Senate in Passaic. Mr. Carr is a man of large intelligence and of the highest chracter." |
 | Carr, Adam: 1870 US Patent No 110,294 Issued 20 December, 1870 to William Selden of Brooklyn, NY, assignor to Adam Carr of Paterson, NY for improvement in valves for steam engines. The patent is for a design that improves the parts previously patented by making them more easily constructed and kept in repair. |

 | Carr, Adam: 1870 Census The census showed Adam (38), a plumber from Scotland living in the 4th Ward of Paterson, NJ along with his wife Sarah (38), Ada (18), William (15), Ella (7), and Henry L (5). Ada and Ella would never marry. Three children died in 1864: Catherine at age 7, Horace Greeley at age 6 and Frances at age 5. Other documents show that his profession is understated. His company, Adam Carr & Co., manufactured brass cocks and iron & galvanized pipes. Eric and Barbara (nee Stockdale) Mann located four US Patents awarded or assigned to Adam Carr in the late 1800's. They are available elsewhere on this website. The patents are associated with steam propulsion and relate directly to his indicated occupation: plumber. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1873 Contested Seat in the Senate "Mr. Adam Carr, the Republican candidate for Senator in Passaic county, at he recent election, has served upon Mr. John Hopper, who was ostensibly elected by 27 majority, a notice of contest. The grounds upon which he contests Mr. Hopper's right to the seat are fifteen in number. The most important are the following: ..."
1) the ballot box was out of custody, 2) a 7th Ward ballot box was taken from the limits of the Ward,3) Carr's ballots were illegally abstracted from the box of 7th Ward, 4) Carr's name was removed from some 7th Ward ballots, and 5) the judge and clerk of the 7th Ward dined at the expense of a named person which amounted to a bribe. |

 | Carr, Adam: 1875 Disputed Bill for Gas Fitting The article was titled, "Who Joseph Black Is." was presented in 3 sections elsewhere on this website to support readability. It continues a previous day's coverage of an act of over-billing by Joseph Black acting as agent for Farrier & Garretson in doing work at Snake Hill while Black was also an employee of Adam Carr's. While Adam was not implicated in the billing or party to the work, the interesting aspect of the story is that the bill totaled $25 while the Freeman assert that the bill should have been $12. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1875 Street Nuisance The "Our Complaint Book" section of the NY Herald Tribune included this submission: To the Editor of the Herald:-
For months past the south side of Cortland street, between Merchant's Hotel and Greenwich street, has been continously obstructed, both on the sidewalk and the passageway of the main street, by carts and carmen, and particularly by dealers in iron pipe, Adam Carr & Co. It is impossible for a lady to pass from the ferry through this, one of the best known streets, to Braodway, without danger of either a torn dress or soiling it. Nor can a private or public vehicle pass to the ferry for a train without obstruction and a delay sufficient to cause loss of train. The attention of "best police in the world" has been called to this annoyance and nuisance wthout avail. Can nothing be done in the premises? B.J.D. |
 | Carr, Adam: 1877 Our Complaint Book - Street Nuisance Dirty Streets - A Serenade
To the Editor of the Herald: -
I have lately seen so much said about the fearful condition of our streets in your worthy paper that I must come to the rescue and propose a novel method of inducing the gentlemen at the head of the Street Cleaning Department to have the job performed at once. I propose that a serenade should be tendered to those gentlemen by the citizens of New York in front of their private residences, and that all musical instruments necessary for the performance, such as old tin kettles, should be picked out of the ash barrels in front of the houses of said citizens. You will oblige me by publishig this "new idea" in your "Complaint Boob." |

 | Carr, Adam: 1878-01-01 Financial Losses Adam Carr, manufacturer of iron pipes, pumps, &c, at No. 43 Cortland streeet, announced to his creditors that he has been obliged to suspend, after a succesfull business career of over twenty-four years. The causes of his failure were mainly the depreciation in values and losses in trade. The liabilities are about $50,000 and the assests will equal that figure if left to continue the business. The assests consist of book accounts, stock in trade and some real estate. A meeting of the creditors has been called to consider the best course to pursue, and it is expected that a settlement will be effected, but at what figure cannot at present be determined. Creditors who were called upon yesterday said that it was deemed best that the business continue, as they could thus realize more than if the assets were sacrificed at forced sale." |
