      Clayton David Hill U.S. Air Force Reserve veteran, world-renowned filmstar

      Clayton David Hill, 78, of Burgettstown, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning, July 26, 2009, in Canonsburg General Hospital.
      He was born May 7, 1931, in Pittsburgh, a son of Ira and Mary Hill.

      Mr. Hill retired in 1975 from the U.S Air Force Reserve, where he was an airplane accident scene investigator and disaster preparedness officer, writing the plans for the prevention and consequences of biological, chemical and nuclear warfare, and was the former firechief of Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. He attended drama school at The Pittsburgh Playhouse and Point Park College, where he appeared in many student productions.

      He began singing on the radio at the age of 6 and sang on WTAE-Pittsburgh on Saturday mornings when he was a teenager. He was also an actor, appeared in operettas and was a movie casting director and a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

      Mr. Hill landed a role as a lead zombie, acclaim and international fame in 1978 in George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead," on which he also worked as the weapons coordinator. He was known as the "sweaterzombie" in the United States and the "Escalator Zombie" in Germany. Hewas featured in Rolling Stone magazine for his work in "Dawn of the Dead."

      He had credited and uncredited speaking roles in many movies, such as"All the Right Moves," "Lady Beware," "Knightriders," "Hellraiser III," "Kid Brother," "Silent Witness," "Maria's Lovers," "The Fishthat Saved Pittsburgh," "Rappin'" and "Death Penalty." He was featured in such movies as "Gung Ho," "Mrs. Soffell," "Stuck with Each Other"and "Children of the Corn II," in which he also did stunt work. He recently finished filming the movie "End Game" with wrestler Kurt Angle, in which he appeared as a priest, Father Clayton. He was due to start filming "River of Darkness" in the fall, another film starring Kurt Angle. It was going to be his first lead part in a film.

      Mr. Hill had worked with numerous movie directors, including Ron Howard and George A. Romero, and was the second assistant director for Romero's "Knightriders" in 1981.

      Along with his wife Sharon, he had cast more than 35 movies as alocation casting director and had done location scouting for movies in many cities and in other countries such as Spain and Morocco.

      While his wife was an assistant to David Copperfield, he traveled with the crew and appeared in illusions with David Copperfield at Caesar's Palace in Lake Tahoe, Atlantic City and Las Vegas. He appeared with David Copperfield in several countries, including Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic.

      When the Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheatre opened in Burgettstown, hewas instrumental in several capacities, especially in the coordination of security plans, and also served as the VIP director.

      He and his wife founded Sharclay Casting, serving as casting director sand recruiters for extras and small speaking roles for movies that were filmed in Pittsburgh.

      He was a member of Eldersville United Methodist Church, a 32nd-degreemember of Richard Vaux Lodge 454 Free and Accepted Masons in Burgettstown and a member of Cheswick Shriners, was proclaimed a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret and was a member of Burgettstown American Legion Post 1526.

      An avid traveler, he also enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes, and fishing with his grandson, Max.

      Surviving are his devoted wife, Sharon A. Ceccatti-Hill of Burgettstown; a daughter, Kimi Hill Wiseman, who resides with her mother, Linda Malone Hill, in Langeloth; a son, Todd S. Hill and wife Sharon Lynn Hill of Burgettstown; grandchildren Clayton David Hill III, Chris Hill, Clinton Hill, Max Hill and Kaleb Welshan; in-laws Doris Hill of Verona, Carolyn and Lou Dallaba of Dormont, Richard and Marie Ceccatti of New York, Sam and Donna Malone of Cross Creek and Kim and Joe Homic and their daughter Sophie of Burgettstown; and 33nieces and nephews.

      Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, Clayton "Kip" Hill II; a granddaughter, Mary Todd Hill; two sisters, Janis Deen and Diane Angelo; and three brothers, Buddy, Norman and Merle Hill.

      Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Lee &Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown. The Richard Vaux Lodge 454 F&AM will conduct a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31,from Lee & Martin Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m.in Eldersville United Methodist Church with Mr. Hill's pastor, the Rev. Dana Hiles, officiating. Interment with full military honors accorded by the U.S. Air Force will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery,Hickory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Eldersville United Methodist Church, 16 Church Road, Burgettstown, PA 15021.
