Emigration |
1860 |
Francis Boquel is believed to have emigrated from Alsace-Loraine in the 1860s. |
Occupation |
1860 |
After his arrival in new York he obtained employment in a plate glass works. When construction of the of the Lehigh Zinc Company plant in Bethlehem, PA was completed, he relocated there.
The Lehigh Zinc Co. mine eventually was flooded by subterranean water and became a swimming hole for men only - called Bare Ass Beach - that was 200 feet deep and about 600 yards wide. Given the mining difficulties in the three mines in the Bethlehem area and technical challenges with spelter operations, he moved to the St. Louis area when he learned of promising zinc mine. Having met and married Bridget Dwyer sometime after she emigrated from Ireland in 1861, she also joined him in the relocation where their first child, Joseph Boquel, was born in 1864.
At some point the family returned to the Bethlehem area, perhaps with the intent of enlisting. At any rate, he enlisted as a private in company B, 88th Infantry Regt on 13 March 1865 (some records indicate30 March) as a substitute for an otherwise eligible male in his Pennsylvania district and received an enlistment bonus. On the date of his enlistment, presumably in the Lehigh area, the 88th Regt was fighting at Dabneys Mills, VA. On 31 March the unit was fighting at hatcher's Run, VA and on 1 April at Five Forks, VA. Eight days later general Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 and the war was over so it is very possible that Francis Boquel never joined the unit before it mustered out of the Army in Washington, DC on 30 June 1865.
Family recollections vary in describing the bonus that Francis received for enlisting; some indicate $1,000 changed hands and others indicate $300 which was standard at the time. Regardless, with his mustering out within days of enlistment, the man whose place he took in the draft tried to avoid payment. His son, Peter Joseph Boquel, said Francis had to take the man to court to get the bonus. He did prevail and used the money to finish the house at 526 Taylor Street. During the brief return to Bethlehem, PA, three children were born between 1867 and 1871.Following his brief enlistment, he returned to the zinc works and remained employed there until 1869 after which he again took up his residence in St. Louis, MO., where he had accepted a position. The position was probably with the Missouri Zinc Company at Carbondale, MO which began to make spelter from Missouri ores in 1867.
US Census records indicate that he continued to live in St. Louis where their last four children were born between 1871 and 1878. The1890 Census shows his returning to 526 Locust, South Bethlehem in1890. He was a tall man, well dressed, wore a beard, which later in life it turned gray. He spoke French with only broken English and interestingly of 5 surviving children in his family, not one learned to speak his native French language.
Upon retirement he remained in South Bethlehem area until his death on 26 January 1895. His obituary indicated that was survived by his widow, Bridget, and five children: Joseph, Augustus, Francis, peter and Adele. The status of Virginia (born about 1867, Euginie (1871), and Josephine (1878) was not reported. Funeral services were held in the Church of the Holy Infancy in South Bethlehem and interment was made in St. Michaels Cemetery. |
Military Service |
30 MAR 1865 [1] |
Francis enlisted as a private in company B, 88th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment on 13 March 1865 (some records indicate 30 March). He enlisted as a substitute for an otherwise eligible male in his Pennsylvania district and received an enlistment bounty of $600. On the date of his enlistment, presumably in the Lehigh area, the 88th Regimentt was fighting at Dabneys Mills, VA. On 31 March the unit was fighting at hatcher's Run, VA and on 1 April at Five Forks, VA. Eight days later General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 and the war was over. If his enlistment was on 30 March, that would have left him two weeks to join the unit in southern Virginia. So, it is very possible that Francis Boquel joined the unit as it was returning north to be mustered out of the Army in Washington, DC on 30 June 1865. Records only reflect his enlistment and mustering out. |

 | Boquel, Francois: 1870c A tintype is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of iron coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s, but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century and it has been revived as a novelty in the 21st. |
