The magazine, established in the beginning of the century by Harry Houdini, awarded him the "Certificate of Merit," one of the profession's most coveted awards. It was made “In recognition and appreciation of fine services to magic and magicians through his many valuable contributions." The award, in the form of a gold scroll, was presented by Walter B. Link to Google MapsObituary - Fredric E. Kolb, 70, of Bernardsville, a teacher and well-known magician, died Monday, March 11, in South Miami Hospital, South Miami, after a short illness. Born in Jersey City, he lived in the Morris-Somerset area for 35 years, the last 16 in Bernardsville, He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Montclair State College, and served in the Army signal corps during World War II. He taught social studies in Morristown High School from 1947 to 1975, and held the position of department chairman at the time of his retirement. Mr. Kolb was best known in the area for his performances as a magician, mentalist and psychic entertainer, an avocation he practiced for more than 50 years until the time of his death. He had performed hundreds of times for charitable, social and professional groups. He became interested in magic as a child and learned all his tricks by reading books on the subject. His first public performance was in 1933, in a political rally for former Jersey City mayor Frank Hague. Among the other performers at the benefit was Frank Sinatra. In a 1983 interview, Mr. Kolb described himself as a kid at heart. “I got interested in magic as a youngster and 50 years later, I’m more excited than ever. I guess I never grew up.” he said. Mr. Kolb believed that magic spoke a universal language that could be understood by people of all ages and national ties. “Everyone is fascinated by magic because it’s an innocent form of humor,” he said. “You know you’re going lo be fooled, but you don’t know how it’s going to be done.” One of the most rewarding aspects of being a magician, Mr. Kolb said, is the opportunity to make people laugh, smile and forget their troubles. “The world today is so brutal and realistic; there’s not much fantasy anymore,” he said. “People love magic. It gives them the chance to act like kids again.” He was the author of several books, including “Exciting Experiments in ESP’ and “Sensational Mentalism.” He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians, and served as vice president of the New Jersey International Brotherhood of Magicians in 1972. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Fredric R. of Eau Claire, Wisc., and Randall C. of Eugene, Ore.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Bernardsville Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 15. Burial was at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. Arrangements were by the Raymond A. Lanterman & Son Funeral Home, Morristown. Bernardsville News - 21 MAR 1985 - Bernardsville, Somerset, New Jersey, USA Find all individuals with events at this location Link to Google Earth
