Payne, 83, who started and operated the first ferry across the Snake river on the Overland trail between Elko, Nev., and Boise, Idaho, died Monday at his ranch near here. Payne crossed the plains of Oregon by ox team in 1851 and later established the Snake river ferry. The family moved to California in 1891. The widow and eight children survive. One son, Ira Payne, is a director of education at the state teachers' college, Tempe. Ariz.     Link to Google MapsObituary - Pioneer Ferryman Dies Near Lakeport LAKEPORT, July 18.— Morgan E. Payne, who built and operated the first ferry across the Snake river on the overland trail between Elko, Nevada, and Boise City, Idaho, is dead at his home near here. Born in Danville, Illinois in 1840, he crossed the plains by ox team to Oregon is (sic) 1851. Spending his youth along that early-day emigrant road, he foresaw the necessity for a ferry at the Snake river crossing and made it a successful business venture for several years. Payne married Miss Harriet Dawson in1870. In 1891 the family moved to the present site of Morgan Hill, Santa Clara county, part of the Payne ranch becoming the town site. They came to Lake county in 1919 and bought 334 acres in Big Valley. Besides his wife, Payne is survived by eight children, Ira Payne, director of education at the Teachers' College of Tempe, Arizona; Ashley Payne of Imperial; Marion Payne of Stockton; Irwin Payne of San Jose; Misses Belle and Alice, Edgar and Alan Payne, living at home.
