First Lieutenant
MIA/KIA
1LT Whaley, piloting a 10-man B-24 Liberator bomber, took off early in the morning of May 29, 1944 from an airfield at San Pancrazio, Italy. The target that day was the Wollersdorf Airdrome at Wiener Neustadt, Austria with additional, nearby targets of a Messerschmidt factory and railroad marshaling yards. The bomber was hit by flak over the primary target which disabled parts of the control system - an acknowledged shortcoming of the aircraft design. As many as six parachutes were observed by other crews before the aircraft crashed 2KM east of Wiener Neustadt, not far from the target. 1LT Whaley was listed as MIA shortly after the initial MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) was submitted in 1944. He remains MIA along with 1204 other US airmen whose remains have never been recovered. The 1947 MACR follow-on investigation documented that four of the crew died, four were held as POWs and 2 were carried as MIA. Captured German documentation indicated that the four POWs were caught within 2 hours of the shoot down. (A summary of the flight with photos and maps is located in the media section of this website.) |

 | Whaley, Edward C: 2015 In Memoriam 1st Lt. Edward C. Whaley Jan. 31, 1920 - May 29, 1944 15th Air Force 47th Wing 376th Group 515th Squadron MISSING IN ACTION I never got to meet you, but I've missed you everyday. Love, your daughter Sharon -
Dallas Morning News columnist, Steve Blow, wrote on 30 May 2015: "Readers told me they wanted to know more about that touching tribute. And Sharon Harville of Dallas was glad to share. It’s why she put the item in the newspaper, after all." "I want him remembered,” she said. “I want his name out there. I want people to know.” (see Steve's full article linked to 1LT Whaley's record on this website.) |
 | Whaley, Edward C: 2015 Memorium - Followup Story A tribute to the dad she never met
by Steve Blow (sblow@dallasnews.com)
Of all the Memorial Day tributes last week, one of the most poignant was a small item placed in the obituary section of this newspaper.
The “In Memoriam” featured a faded military photo of a solemn, square-jawed young man. “1st Lt. Edward C. Whaley,” the memorial said. “Jan. 31, 1920 — May 29, 1944 — Missing in Action.”
And at the bottom, these words: “I never got to meet you, but I’ve missed you every day. Love, your daughter Sharon.”
Readers told me they wanted to know more about that touching tribute. And Sharon Harville of Dallas was glad to share. It’s why she put the item in the newspaper, after all.
“I want him remembered,” she said. “I want his name out there. I want people to know.” |
 | High Flight The author of the poem, John Gillespie Magee, Jr., was killed on 11 December 1941 at the age of 19, in a mid-air collision over Lincolnshire, England. He was an American flying a British Spitfire on a training mission. His poem has become a favorite of American military pilots. This copy was purchased by Regis at a shop just outside the main gate to the U.S. Army Aviation Center at Fort Rucker, AL. It is linked to military pilots in the tree - except Regis, who if linked would preclude it from being publicly viewable. |
 | "Tell Me About My Boy" This brochure was compiled and distributed by the Technical Information Branch of the U.S. Army Quartermaster General and later by the American Graves Registration Service. It offered guidance to the next of kin of servicemen killed during WWII on how their kin's remains would be repatriated. By convention, all service deaths overseas during the war were interred in a temporary grave - immaculately laid out. After the war the next of kin were canvased about their wishes for final burial. They had four options:
1. In a private cemetery in the United States.
2. In a private cemetery in a foreign county.
3. In a permanent United States cemetery overseas.
4. In an permanent National cemetery in the United States .
The next of kin were established methodically if the deceased was not married:
1. Surviving spouse.
2. Son, if over 21 years if the spouse had remarried.
3. Father, if no son was over 21 years.
4. Mother.
5. Eldest brother over 21 years.
6. Eldest sister over 21 years.
4. Other relatives in the (unspecified) order of their relationship.
The pamphlet is linked on this website to 37 individuals (as of 28 OCT 2022) who were documented as KIA/DOW or otherwise died overseas during WWII and whose bodies were recovered. Relatives of personnel listed as MIA were not included in the distribution nor in the procedures.
[The library staff at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) graciously rendered the full document into PDF version at my request on 18 OCT 2022.] |

Name: Earnest Whaley
Gender: Male

RJCarr, 10 May 2020:
Based upon my research, Ora Lorena Causey (1901-1998) was never the wife of Earnest William Whaley (1987-1950).
Many family trees have conflated her name with Ira Kirkpatrick (FaG memorial 175564483). Ira’s first name appears to read Ora on her Oklahoma wedding license to Earnest Whaley dated 21 Jan 1917. Earnest & Ira were the parents of four children as carried on the 1930 and 1940 census records. They were:
Edward Cecil (1920-1944)
Virginia Katheryn (1922-2007)
Jimmie Ruth (1927-1991)
Robert Lee (1930-living)
On the other hand, Ora Lorena Causey appears to first be married to Percie Ware (1897-1961) from 1899 until perhaps 1940. In 1941 Ora Lorena is shown with the last name Whaley and residing in Oklahoma City as noted below:
Residence Year: 1941
Street address: 309 39th
Residence Place: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA
Spouse: James A Whaley
Publication Title: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, City Directory, 1941
