Summary of the Andrew Gideon Leverett Family
By Virginia Leverett Mobley. The only living child.

My father was named Andrew Gideon for his mothers brother Andrew Dozier (that would be Emily Dozier Leverett’s) and his father’s brother Gideon Leverett and was born May 30th, 1849 in Fish Head Valley (then Talladega Co.) now Clay Co., Alabama. At the age of 12 years he became blind from soar eyes an Epidemic of the Civil War days. After the War and the years of reconstruction that followed there was no schools for white children near enough for him to attend. On March 12, 1874 he married Sarah Louiesa Armstrong born Nov. 24 — 1849 being the same year of my fathers. She too was deprived of attending school after the war closed in 1865. Mother did have in her possession a Blue Book spelling book and from it she gained a very good education in reading, spelling, arithmetic & writing. Living in Fish Head their first child Ethy Dozier Hyatt was born Dec. 13th 1875. 2nd Velma Louise born August 27 1878 3rd Shelly Box was born June 12th 1881 & Laura Exa was born Nov 3rd - 1882.

The unrest of the people of the South after the War many families were leaving for Texas mostly and in 1882 or 1883 my father & mother with their first four children moved to Hays Co. Texas near San Marcos lived there five years Olive Judson was born there May 16th 1884 and given the name Olive for a near by
neighbor by name Olive & Judson for our fathers oldest brother. On Sept 27th 1886 Letha Ola was born.

After living in Texas four years my father went back to Alabama to visit his father and grandpa begged him to sell the farm and take them (2 wife and dad’s youngest sister Mattie) to Texas with him so that grandpa could die near them. My father could not sell his father’s place in that time so returned to mother & children in Texas and during the year following grandpa became very ill and kept begging my father to sell their home in Texas and go back to Alabama to live. They did so and returned to live in Alabama the last part of 1887. My father and his nephew Judd Holly buying out my grandpa’s land at 13 dollars per acre and building grandpa a new house in the yard. On Aug 5th 1888 Arthur Gideon was born and on August 9th 1890 Virginia Irene was born and sometime the last of that year Grandpa and Grandma and Aunt Mattie left Alabama to live near my fathers sister Myrtilda who had married Love Howell and living near Dublin, Texas. On Nov. 20th 1891 my father sold his part of the old Leverett Plantation to his nephew Judd Holly loosing Fifteen hundred dollars and going first to Norman Okla. and then on to Dublin, Texas. When he reached Dublin he had .50 cents in his pocket & a wife and eight children to care for.

I do not remember how he was able to buy 160 acres of land one & one half miles north of Dublin. We lived there for ten years in 1893 Myrtie Bell was born on July 26th and on Aug 21st 1895 Vida Lou was born. She lived two years & died of inflammation of stomach & bowels. Nine of us living to be grown.

Early in 1901 we sold the farm living on till Jan. 1st 1902 having bought some 365 acres five miles west of Stephenville in the summer of 1901 We moved there and lived one by one taking their leave through the years till we were all gone and in 1917 my mother said to dad 'Sell this place and everything I am going
near my girls.’ On the day the family came to take possession they received a message to come to me in Hedley Texas. I was very ill. They came & were there for Thanksgiving and Mother’s 68th birthday. Had been there six weeks and Mother took the flu and went into Phemonia and passed away on Jan. 3th 1918 the year of the first Flu.

Our father lived three years and he died of a stroke on May 28th 1921”
