    Notes
    • RJCarr, 23 Jan 2021:
Sarah E. Tier is shown as a daughter of Peter Tier (born about 1802) based upon data found on a copy of a Heusser family tree drawn in about 1886 (which was the birth date of the last person in that tree - Albert Henry Heusser born 11 MAR 1886). Peter Tier's initial entry on the tree was as the son of George Tier(s), who was the son of George Tier, who was the son of Valentine Tier (born about 1743). In the upper right portion of that tree, is a later addition to the tree that includes Peter Tier's wife Betsey (sic) Payne. That union resulted in the birth of Sarah Elizabeth Tier (later determined to be born 2 JAN 1831). Sarah's entry on that tree is the first of only two primary documents to associate her with Tier ancestors. (Assuming acceptance of the Heusser tree as an acceptable primary source.)

The second document to reflect Tier ancestry was Sarah E. (Tier) Carr's obituary in The Morning Call (Paterson, NJ) where it was noted "(S)he was the daughter of the late William Tier, a cabinet maker." Therein lies the rub; the first document shows her father was Peter Tier(s) who was a carpenter - as reflected in the 1870 US Census. The second document indicates that her father was William Tier who was a cabinetmaker.

Which assertion is correct? Peter & William are unlikely the same person even given that a cabinetmaker could more generally be called a carpenter?

It is possible that Peter Tier(s) was also known as Peter William Tier(s) although no "William Tier" has been identified in Paterson, NJ directories nor on any US Census enumeration in Paterson in 1850, 1860 or 1870.

Where did the obituary writer obtain his information? Did the writer of the obituary err in naming Sarah's father William since she did have a son named William.

Email communication with several Tier family lines whose ancestors are reflected on the Heusser family tree did not offer corroborating data that would link Sarah Elizabeth Tier with Valentine Tier.

Finally, DNA test results shared on Ancestry.com do not yet link Regis John Carr with any Tier family member. Although, when that point was shared with a Tier descendant, he surmised that the the DNA results may not be sensitive enough to reflect a relationship.

Link to Google MapsCensus - This enumeration probably erred in listing one son and two daughters - without given names. In light of the ages shown, the logical enumeration would have been one daughter, Ada, born in 1852 and two sons, William & Horace born in 1855 and 1858. A second daughter, Catherine Frances born in December, 1859 was not listed at all. All four children would have been living on the date of the enumeration - June 1860. The three eldest will be present on the subsequent census in 1870. Catherine, the youngest, would die in 1864. - 1860 - Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA Find all individuals with events at this location Link to Google Earth

Link to Google MapsCensus - Sarah (Tier) Carr, age 68, was shown living at 125 Vreeland Avenue, Paterson, NJ. She was widowed and living with daughters, Ada (47) a physician and Ella (37) as well as a grand-daughter Clara A Carr (9). Clara is the daughter of Sarah's son William Seward Carr. William and his wife Elizabeth Donnelly were living at 433 Broadway, Paterson. The explanation for the separation is unknown, however, the fact that William and Elizabeth had 12 children may be a clue - bed space! But to cloud the issue a bit, Clara is also listed the next day, 12 June 1910, on her parents Census sheet as living with them. - 11 JUN 1900 - 125 Vreeland Avenue, Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA Find all individuals with events at this location Link to Google Earth

Link to Google MapsObituary - Mrs. Sarah E. Carr Mrs. Sarah E. Carr a resident of this city since her birth nearly eighty years ago, passed away in her family residence, 125 Vreeland avenue, early yesterday morning, after an illness of eleven weeks. Mrs. Carr's last trip from her home to this city took place eleven weeks ago last Monday night, when she was accompanied by several of her children and grandchildren to the Market Street M. E. church to attend an anniversary celebration of the congregation. She took ill the following day and complications, which followed hastened the end. Mrs. Carr was born in this city, Jan. 2 1831. She was the daughter of the late William Tier, a cabinet maker. Jan. 1, 1851, she was married to Adam Carr manufacturer and dealer in steam fittings and plumbing supplies. The couple lived in New York for a time because of Mr. Carr's business interests. The factory was located at Vreeland avenue, near the Susquehanna railroad crossing, where it still stands and is at present occupied by a manufacturing concern. The family located their residence on Vreeland avenue about 1869, when that section was little more than a wilderness, and it was not until several years later that stages operated between Vreeland avenue amid the city twice daily, thus furnishing the first conveyance for residents and workers in that section. The deceased woman had been a member of Market Street M.E. church for fifty years. She leaves the following children: Dr. Ada Carr, of this city; William S. and Miss Ella Carr, of this city, and Dr. Henry L. Carr, of Brooklyn. Her late husband died about seventeen years ago. The following are grandchildren: Arthur C., Florence. M., William A., Elizabeth D., Clara A., Edith T., Helen D., Louis D., H Parke, Benjamin D., Ella G. and Ada Carr.
